Rural Affairs Committee welcomes increase in fines for littering and flytipping

Legislation that increases the fine paid by people who are caught littering or fly-tipping has been welcomed by the Rural Affairs, Climate Change and Environment Committee.

The legislation, considered by the Committee, will increase fixed penalty notices for littering from £50 to £80 and for flytipping from £50 to £200 from 1 April 2014.

Convener of the Committee Rob Gibson MSP said:

"Our Committee wholeheartedly supports this legislation. Increasing the level of fine paid by people who litter and flytip sends a signal that this type of activity will not be tolerated.

"Not only does littering and flytipping have the potential to significantly harm the environment, it is also extremely unsightly and costly for local authorities to clean up."

The Litter (Fixed Penalties) (Scotland) (Order) 2013 SSI 2013/315 was considered at the Rural Affairs, Climate Change and Environment Committee on 04 December.
