A leading children's charity are seeking volunteer mentors across the Highlands to work with young people. The volunteers will be supported by a project Action for Children have just launched in Inverness and Ross shire - Caithness and Sutherland are next!

Action for Children in the Highlands have begun delivering ‘Intandem', a needs led volunteer mentoring service funded by Inspiring Scotland, for young people aged 8-14 who face complicated and challenging situations.

Intandem has been set up to support young people coming into, or leaving the care system, and provide a positive adult role model. The project will match mentors with trained volunteers to build a positive, trusting, supportive and secure relationship.

Eilidh Gilchrist, project manager at Intandem, said: "We want to offer young people a mentor, a consistent and positive person in their lives to help and support them achieve their potential. We are looking for volunteers to commit to two or three hours a week to mentor the young people we will be working with.

"If you have the time and the patience, we can offer you a challenging opportunity with fantastic training within our exciting and developing project and a wonderful sense of achievement. This is an amazing opportunity to not only develop mentoring skills but also to make a real and lasting impact on the life of a young person.

We can work together to provide:

· regular weekly visits with a volunteer mentor who holds the young person in positive regard
· access to age appropriate activities
· support from experienced and informed staff
· Enough time to build a relationship which allows the young person to develop confidence, skills and resilience.

"Most of us are lucky enough to have at least one person who supported us while we were growing up. You could be that person for one of the young people we support."

Our intandem mentoring service provides support to children and young people Throughout Highland, Caithness and Sutherland by offering them one to one Volunteer mentor support. Training is usually held in our Head offices in Inverness and we will aim to deliver the training for any mentors in Caithness/Sutherland in more easily accessible area.
