The long-awaited report of Public Health Scotland (PHS) into maternity services at Caithness General Hospital was launched today, and recommends that the Henderson Maternity Unit moves to a midwife led model (CMU).  The Report concludes that Caithness does not have the population to support an obstetrician, and that the presence of specialists without the backup of intensive care facilities or a paediatrician creates unnecessary risk factors for patients.

Members of the Caithness Countryside Volunteers turned out in force on Sunday (30 October 2016) to assist with a habitat enhancement project for a rare butterfly species in the Dunnet Bay area.   Dunnet Bay is home to the most northerly colony of the Small Blue Butterfly whose caterpillars depend solely on kidney vetch as a food source.

Thurso Beach in Caithness had virtually every little piece of litter removed yesterday (Wednesday 5 October 2016) thanks to the hard work of pupils from Mount Pleasant Primary School.   The Keep Scotland Beautiful registered beach clean was undertaken by the Primary 4 and 5 classes and the P4 Gaelic medium class.
