Nominations open for Scottish Education Awards 2013.   The search has started for the Highlands’ brightest education stars as local people are called upon to nominate top teaching professionals and schools in the area for recognition at the Scottish Education Awards 2013.

CAITHNESS sisters Seren Whyte 23 and Elise Whyte 21 have completed the LeJog Land’s End to John O’ Groats classic car reliability challenge, in their Mini Cooper.  They were among the first arrivals to complete the popular route and met up, today, with other drivers who stopped off at Wick's former Haldanes car park where their cars were driven onto low-loaders for the return journey south.

New Scheme to Tackle Litter at Schools In Highland
The Highland Council awarded £24,000 to trial new project to prevent littering in the Highlands.   A new project led by The Highland Council to prevent littering around 10 secondary schools in the Highlands is set to take place thanks to funding awarded by Zero Waste Scotland, the Scottish Government-backed body set up to help Scotland reduce waste, recycle more, and use resources sustainably.

Extending The Challenge
Young people will be at the heart of the transition to the low carbon economy, Climate Change Minister Paul Wheelhouse said today.   The minister said that the actions of today’s young people and the way this generation live their lives will have a huge bearing on Scotland’s ability to meet ambitious climate change targets of an 80 per cent reduction in emissions by 2050.

Local people in and around Caithness are being invited to an evening reception by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) in the Pentland Hotel, Thurso, at 7pm on Wednesday 5 December.   Scottish Natural Heritage is the Scottish Government's advisor on the management, enjoyment, understanding and sustainable use of Scotland’s wildlife, natural habitats and landscape.

Viking Sites Lead the Way in Global Treasure Hunt
Highland Council are part of an innovative new tourism initiative linking sites in Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Shetland, Orkney, Highland, and the Isle of Man.   The Thing Sites GeoTour, which launched last week, the first outside the American Continent and has been developed as part of the EU Northern Periphery Programme funded THING Project.
