Funding Opportunity - National Voluntary Organisations 16b Grants
The Scottish Government has announced that it is seeking applications under the National Voluntary Organisations 16b Grants scheme.  Section 16b of the National Health Service (Scotland) Act 1978, gives Scottish Ministers the statutory power to make grants to not for profit organisations that provide health services in Scotland which are complementary to those required by statute.

Scottish Enterprise has announced that Small and Medium sized companies can access equity finance through the Scottish Seed Fund.   The Scottish Seed Fund (SSF), managed by The Scottish Investment Bank (SIB) is designed to improve the availability of finance for start-up and young growing companies in Scotland.

Creative Scotland has announced the launch of a new fund to help boost youth arts provision across Scotland.  The £3.5million Hub Development Fund will support partnerships between national and regional youth arts and other youth service providers, to deliver youth arts provision across a range of artforms.

The Caithness Countryside Volunteers ventured across to Mackay country this month to work on a ‘boggy’ project on the flows of Sutherland.   The peatlands of Caithness and Sutherland are a globally important habitat and the RSPB are currently undertaking work to restore some areas of former conifer plantation back to native bog.

Community Groups Encouraged to Apply To Wind Farm Fund
Community groups and charities serving those within Latheron, Lybster and Clyth; and Tannach and District Community Council areas are being encouraged to apply to the next round of the E.On Camster Community Fund.   The Fund will welcome applications for projects which will bring a range of enhancements to those areas, for example projects that improve local amenities, promote the area’s natural and cultural heritage, attract tourists to the area or champion sustainable energy use.

The latest photos from the construction of the new Wick Council Offices show work going on the rooftop of the former Ensign building the part being retained and incorporated into the new complex.   Once completed the new offices will house all council office staff that were formerly in range of buildings around the town mainly the social work Offices at Camps and the Education staff from Rhind House who recently moved up to the temporary offices at Girnigoe Street.

Saturday 25th January 2015 saw some sunshine between the rain showers and the wind drove waves to heights of 20 feet into Thurso East, Caithness, Scotland.   A few surfers were out riding the rollers in.

Saltire Awards Scottish GovernmentYoung people aged between 12 and 25 last night at St Fergus Gallery, Wick were given their certiificates showing they had gained Saltire Awards for various levels of volunteers clocking up a lot of hours over the last year.   Saltire Awards are supported by the Scottish Government and MSP Rob Gibson was on hand to prsent the certificates.

Members of The Highland Council’s Finance Housing and Resources Committee have agreed to provide up £200,000 over the next four years to support the refurbishment of Highland war memorials in recognition of the centenary of the start of World War 1.   The funding of £50,000 per year will allow the Council to make bids for additional funding of £110,000 from external sources, including the Scottish Government’s Centenary Memorial Restoration Fund to repair and refurbishment 175 war memorials for which the Council has responsibility.

The European Union is failing to respond effectively to the problem of illegal drug use and the spread of new psychoactive substances1, states an EESC opinion voted on 21 January.   Well-known old psychoactive substances include cannabis, cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and morphine.

Candidates to represent their community sought
Residents in the Highlands are being encouraged to bolster the ranks of their local Community Council as Interim elections take place to fill vacant positions serving eight areas of Nairn, Lochaber, Inverness and Caithness.   The Highland Council, who administers the interim elections, are inviting nominations from people looking to fill vacancies on the following Community Councils.
