Supporting Communities Redeveloping Play Area
The Highland Council has launched a new section of its website dedicated to upgrading play area provision across the Highlands.   The Council currently has 306 equipped play areas spread across the region in rural and urban locations.  
Thurso Community Development Trust Gets Share In £1.5 Million For Highland-wide Climate Movement To Reduce Waste
Community groups across the Highlands are coming together as part of a new climate movement to help reduce waste and tackle a throwaway culture.   The Highland Community Waste Partnership, led by Keep Scotland Beautiful, is being made possible by a £1,498,568 award, announced today (Tue 25 January) by The National Lottery Community Fund.

This year, Wick High S2 Computing Science pupils took part in the BEBRAS UK Challenge.  The challenge aims to introduce computational thinking to students and is designed to get students all over the world excited about Computing.

Helping communities recover from the pandemic
A report that calls for tackling poverty and inequality to be central to the recovery from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has been welcomed by the Scottish Government.   Today's initial response to the Social Renewal Advisory Board’s report ‘If not now, when?’ outlines work already underway in areas such as housing, fair work, supporting parents and young people into employment, and investing in our communities.

A group of visually impaired young people in Highland are reaching out to other young people with sight loss to come together and speak out about their lives and experiences.   Supported by Highland Children and Young People's Forum, and under the umbrella of their youth participation project Inspire Highland, this group will provide a vital opportunity for young people with a visual impairment to share experiences, learn from each other and campaign on key issues affecting their lives.

The CNSFund has committed over £79k to community groups in Caithness & North Sutherland in its recent grant rounds.  Funded by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, a wide range of community-led projects throughout the Dounreay travel to work area are to benefit from the grant support.  
New Chair and Vice Chair for Highland Youth Parliament
The Highland Youth Parliament (HYP) has voted in a new Chair, Innes Morgan from Thurso and Vice Chair, Isaac Beckley from Glenurquhart, near Inverness.   The Highland Youth Parliament is the elected parliament for young people in the Highlands with over 100 elected members via schools and youth forums across the area.

Six submissions from The Highland Council were successful in being featured in Education Scotland's What Scotland Learned 100 stories of lockdown publication.   The submissions include Lundavra Nursery, Speech and Language Therapy, Early Years Education Support, Badcaul and Scoraig Primaries, Wick High School, and on behalf of Comunn na Gàidhlig.
