Recently Primary 2 and Primary 6 pupils of Pennyland Primary School in Thurso, buddied up to tackle a serious issue in their local environment - rubbish! Many of the children were shocked at the amount of litter they encountered. In just 45 minutes 14 black sacks were filled with not only litter but many other items such as a large fluorescent light bulb and a royal mail box.

The crowds were out in force for Thurso Gala 2016 night on Saturday 25 June 2016. The change of venue to the car park area seems to have been a good one with much wider space for all the activities.
Pulteneytown Academy will soon be no more when it joins with South School under its new name of Newton Park and moves to a brand new school. An open day was held to allow anyone including former pupils to have final look around the old school before it gets demolished later this year to make way for a new playing field for the new school.
Over 140 pupils from Thurso High School, Wick High School, Golspie High School and Tain Royal Academy descended upon North Highland College UHI's ETEC building last week to take part in The Bloodhound Project Model Rocket Car Challenge. This is a global competition backed by Guinness World Records.
The 2016 Caithness County Show will be here before you know it. So anyone who still has an entry form waiting to go in or has not completed one yet should get their skates on.
Over forty members of the public attended a series of high profile guided walks on the peatlands of Caithness and Sutherland led by the Highland Council Rangers. Andy Summers, Senior Countryside Ranger said: "We saw lots of exciting wildlife including great views of a peregrine falcon, breeding greenshanks and red-throated divers, dragonflies hunting around bog pools.
The new Noss primary school in Wick is bright and airy. The rooms are different colours and windows are full length with air condition to control temperatures.
Enjoy an illustrated talk on 'An Introduction to Caithness Seabirds' with some coffee/tea & home baking before taking a short walk to view a puffin colony in the Dunbeath area. 3rd June 2016.
Maternity Unit In Crisis Consultants - Too Many Locums A new local lobbying group "CHAT" Caithness Health Action Team has been formed by a group of local Caithness people concerned about a variety of matters affecting health services in Caithness. These vary from Maternity where many more mothers in recent times are being sent to Raigmore hospital in Inverness, Lack of consultants, Locum cover, Lack of GP's.
Just less than a week separated Halkirk and Melvich Primary School's village litter picks but the weather couldn’t have been more different. Both village litter picks were undertaken as part of the schools Eco-studies programme and registered with the Keep Scotland Beautiful campaign and each event received assistance from The Highland Council’s local Countryside Ranger Paul Castle.

Records were broken for the numbers of models on show and for the numbers of people coming along to view the amazing collections that had come from both Caithness and many other parts of the country. The Model Show has now purchased its own tables so no longer needs to make a round trip to Dornoch to borrow them.

The latest photo in our gallery for the new Noss Primary school on the north side of the river show it is well on its way to completion. The new school will replace North and Hillhead primary schools.

LOOK OUT your dancing shoes!...the Caithness Big Band is swinging into town next week. The musicians are again playing for the Caithness Heart Support Group, at Mackays Hotel, Wick, and it promises to be quite a night.
