The Caithness Broch project group have made an exciting announcement on their Facebook page about another momentous step in their plans to build a new broch.   After a lengthy search for the perfect site, we are pleased to announce that we have identified an area north of Latheron known as Flygla as our preferred site for our 'Big Broch Build'.

The University of the Highlands and Islands Archaeology Institute, in partnership with the Yarrows Heritage Trust, are preparing for a fourth season of excavation at the Burn of Swartigill in Thrumster, Caithness, Scotland.   Previous seasons of excavation at the site have uncovered a complex of Iron Age structures, which are providing an important window into Iron Age society away from the monumental architecture of the Brochs.

Family History Conference - Saturday, April 27th
Family history enthusiasts from across Scotland and beyond will gather in Caithness this month for a major one-day conference.   Wick's Pulteney Centre Saturday is the venue on Saturday, April 27th for the annual conference of the Scottish Association of Family History Societies (SAFHS) under the title of Northern Roots.

We are almost at the start of our new season at Mary Anne's Cottage in Dunnet.   Recruiting volunteers has become increasingly difficult these last few years, and with the 1st May looming we are realising that we will possibly be struggling this season with who we have; two of our regulars have opted to become ‘standby', meaning they are only able to help on an emergency basis.

Talks have taken place on the possibility of reopening Thurso's Caithness Horizons which closed last week due to financial problems.   The operators of the museum and art gallery said increasing running costs and reduced income had made the running of the site "unsustainable".

Get Help With Your Family History Search
After its winter break, Caithness Family History Society has restarted its "help" sessions for those who would like to research their family history, or need advice on how to continue.   If you are interested, go along to the CFHS office in Caithness Horizons, Old Town Hall, Thurso, between 2pm and 4pm on any Saturday afternoon or on the last Wednesday afternoon of any month.
